NaKniSweMo. What’s that you may wonder?
As posted by the Knitty blog on November 1, 2010:
You might have heard for NaNoWriMo… National Novel Writing Month? Started in 1999, the idea was to encourage writers to set themselves a goal to write a 50,000 word novel in a month, in the otherwise grey and uninteresting month of November.
Our own clever Shannon Okey decided that she had enough novels, but needed a new sweater, so NaKniSweMo was born – National Knit a Sweater Month. After all, most sweaters have at least 50,000 stitches – and goodness knows, knitting a stitch is easier and faster than choosing the right word…
I have two, failed attempts with this event:
- 2015 – I was trying to knit Harvest by Tin Can Knits, a cardigan pattern. I think I had lost interest in the WIP.
- 2017 – I tried knitting Shapely Boyfriend by Stefanie Japel. However, the yarn I was using was a light worsted so the fabric kept coming out too small. How’d I know that? One attempt fit the youngest.
So this 2018, I’m giving NaKniSweMo another go. Hopefully third time’s the charm.
The husband bought me this sweater kit from Barrett Wool for Mother’s Day earlier this year. Susan B. Anderson and Barrett Wool Co. with Melanie Hoffman collaborated together on these kits where you get to choose what color yarn – of Home Worsted – and what size. With the kit came a cute, little tin of wire stitch markers and a free download code to get the pattern, Little Twigs, on Ravelry.
I chose Huron, this deep blue. I wanted a neutral color for my jumper and wanted something other than brown or grey. Isn’t it lovely?
I need to set up a spreadsheet to keep track of the number of stitches I knit for Little Twigs. I honestly don’t expect to finish my sweater by November 30th, but I do want to have another jumper for my knit drawer. I’m still waiting for it to cool down enough to wear my (Big Woods) Flax.
Wish me luck, pls! I hope to work on it a little every day. What project (of any kind) are you working on right now or will work on soon? Thank you for dropping by today. TGIF!
Good luck to you. I’ve thought about it but considering that I’ve had Wink OTN for almost 4 years now and I’ve only just split for the armholes (on a top-down, raglan cardigan)…..I think I’m screwed. Oh well.

The yarn colour is lovely! I tried to do the novel writing challenge two years ago and couldn’t finish it because of writer’s block! I hope the third time IS a charm for you! Good luck!!

I didn’t know about this event and I love the idea, thank you for sharing it. I’ll be following your progress, your sweater choice is adorable! I want to join the event, so I’ll have to think quickly of a pattern and yarn for a sweater.

I decided to try NaKniSweMo this year, too! It is my second sweater ever, first adult-size sweater. Fingers crossed. I didn’t get as much done as I had hoped but maybe this weekend I can work on it if we don’t go out for husband’s birthday.

Love both the pattern and color you have planned. Good luck & have fun! Gone are the days when I could knit a sweater in a month. I think that I accomplished it twice but it was all that I knitted on. Now there’s 6 blankets on the go plus several socks on the needles not to mention a beast of a sweater (more like a bathrobe!) & a lingering shawl project. Yikes!
