It’s Monday! What are you reading?

It's Monday! What Are You Reading

I’m linking up with It’s Monday! What are you reading? hosted by Kathryn of The Book Date later on today. Kathryn took over this weekly, Monday meme from Shelia of Book Journey who had taken it over from J Kayne Book Blog. This meme is not just about adult books either. If you read picture and chapter books, juvenile fiction, or even YA, they count as well. Jen Vincent of Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee of Unleashing Readers give this Monday, book post link up a kid-focus.

The Dillio

It feels much cooler in the house at 78° than it does outside which is 90°. My teenager is at her first, official team practice and they had to start warming up by running six laps around the full courts. Please think about her this week as the coaches will be closely watching, making observations, and making decisions about how the ladders for Varsity and for JV will stand for this upcoming season. My kid had four months of private lessons, the last two months twice a week. She had a tough coach who kept it real with her, making us happy that someone was challenging and pushing her.

“You should always make time for books”

I continued on with the modern, light, and fun this past weekend. My honey’s been reading a lot with his Kindle, especially since our Oahu trip where he took advantage of the lanai view and breeze every day. Here at home, he and I have had reading sessions – he laid out on the couch and me in the grey chair with my feet propped up on the coffee table.

The Best Man (Blue Heron, #1) by Kristan Higgins

Kindle version

While searching for a new book to read, Kristan Higgans’s name popped into my little brain. I was actually spelling her name wrong and had to hunt down her work on Goodreads. I had only read If Only You Knew which was a good read and I guess I had subconsciously paired her writing with entertainment.

Faith and Levi, a somewhat oil-and-vinegar pair. Constant clashing that goes back to their younger years. They reminded me of butting rams at times. Boy did Faith make me laugh with some of the names she called him. And was she the Queen of Sarcasm. Watch out for the other pockets of sarcasm/frankness! I was LMAO! Four stars.

A Shifter’s Curse (Rouen Chronicles #1) by Raven Steele/Ava Mason

Kindle version, owned by me

I had bought this Kindle book at a cheap price. I saw it advertised around Facebook and IG. I was intrigued since the plot involved a shapeshifter, a witch, and a vampire.

I wanted to finish this read up since I’m waiting for my hard copy requests to come in. In all honesty, I wasn’t impressed by this one so I’m not going to waste much time here. Nothing about the female lead tugged at my heartstrings and made me want to root for her. Yeah she was strong but did I think she was a badass? No. The cockiness of the shifters made me roll my eyes. The danger was pretty believable and the violence factors were typical but everything felt pedestrian. Sorry, two stars.

I’m off to prep the rib eyes for dinner tonight and then I have to pick up the teen. I hope you’re having a good Monday. Thanks for poppin by and TTYS.

  1. I love Kristan H. I always spell her name wrong! I really enjoyed her romance books and the last few years it has been more women’s fiction and I’ve loved them. She has a new one out and I am waiting for it to arrive. Have a great week. The rib eyes sound like a great meal.

  2. All good hopes for the decisions regarding your daughter’s upcoming season. It sounds like she has worked so hard, so I hope she enjoys reaching all her goals and getting placed where she wants to be! I’m going to go look up the Rouen Chronicles. This is a new one for me. Thanks for sharing these titles and I hope you have a wonderful reading week, Stefanie!

  3. I know your teen has been working hard and will secure a spot, wherever she wants to be, but I’ll still be keeping my fingers and toes crossed and sending all the good thoughts her way. Thanks again for sharing your books. I always find something interesting to add to my list!

  4. Hope things are going well for your daughter this week? Did I miss what sport? I have not read Higgins before–sounds like an engaging read. I am in the middle of The Long Winter by Laura Ingalls Wilder–I have a few childhood favorites on my newly formed list– i was a voracious reader in my growing up years–I want to rekindle my love for it and not just make time for it at bedtime.

  5. I have to say, The Shifter’s Curse caught my eye there immediately but thanks for the real review of it! I won’t go chasing it down in a hurry.

Wishing you all all the luck for the tennis! I hope she does well!!! It sounds like she couldn’t be better prepared. Thinking of you guys.

    1. Thank you. It’s been too hot to have challenges going on. Next week will be more mild. Yeah, you may like the book but it just wasn’t my cup of tea.

  6. Fingers crossed for your daughter, sounds like she’s really working hard.
I like that quote about books. Enjoy your reads, I have read Kristan Higgins before as well.

    1. Thank you. They’re slowly making practice about trying out singles and doubles and challenges. We had a break in weather this week but it’s slowly heating up again.
